Mr. Cole became a Christian at the age of sixteen at a Church of Christ revival at the beginning of summer in Waco, Texas, met his future wife the following fall in a small farm town. She agreed to marry him when they were twenty-four and they enjoyed thirty-eight years of marriage until she passed away from cancer. While on active duty in the Air Force he was a Project Officer in the Launch Vehicle System Program Office in Los Angeles, California, buying hardware, integrating satellites, and launching them into geosynchronous orbit. Then he was transferred to Houston, Texas, to the Johnson Space Center as a Flight Controller for the Space Shuttle. Just as President Reagan was being inaugurated for his first term, he became a civilian but still continued working in the human spaceflight program. He continued in the human space program until shortly after the end of the Space Shuttle Program.
